I Peter 1

V. 10

Peter clearly declares that the Old Testament prophets proclaimed a future grace. Jesus said, “many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it; and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it” (Matthew 13:17 NASB).  They may not have clearly understood all that was revealed to them (the prophets of old) but they did know that grace was necessary.  Most likely the Old Testament prophets could clearly see that men could not obey the law in their natural sinful state, and that only an act of grace could allow men into the company of a Holy God.

V. 11

The Prophets understood the movement of the Spiritual God that predicted the suffering of Christ, which is something that the scribes and priest of Christ’s day did not. This may also reveal a point concerning Satan. Although Satan knows scripture it is doubtful that he understood the necessity of Christ’s suffering and death, or else he would have opposed the cross. Although Satan certainly is a mighty foe, it is also important to understand that is he does not have the same all-knowing power that God has.

God slowly unveiled the mystery of grace.

V. 12

Even angles long to see the mystery of grace. Although mighty ministering spirits, some of which stand in the presence of God, they too wondered over the mystery of grace. Perhaps we’ll be able to ask Gabriel what was going through his mind as he announced the birth of God’s Son, and perhaps we’ll be told what Michael was thinking as they crucified the Son. I wonder what the angels thought when they were sent to announce to the visitors of the grave that Jesus was rise. No doubt grace caused a stir in heaven itself.

V. 10-15

Because what has been imparted to us – grace - we are to ready our mind, be transformed to a new behavior – be holy. The prophets longed for grace, the angels even marveled at grace, and because we have grace revealed to us, we should walk in a new life.

V. 13

The term to “gird up the loins” was a common term.  Because of the robes and tunics of the day, for people to move quickly and word effectively they had to be tied up so the legs could move freely. To “gird up the loins of your mind” means to prepare you mind to work. Christianity is not for the thoughtless. Christianity is work – it works the mind as well as the body and soul. Living a holy life requires thought and study of the word. Today there are far too many believers that are not living the holy life because they have not put any study into the word of God.  The instruction book for holiness is the Bible, and Christians must study it.

V. 14

Where did people ever get the idea that they can remain the old sinful self after salvation? We are told to be obedient children.
