I Peter 1

V. 15, 16

Wow what a commandment! Someone is going to say impossible. Perhaps while we remain in this sinful body, surrounded by a sinful world, that does seem to be impossible, BUT all to often we use that as an excuse. I have failed a number of times after being saved, and will most likely fail a number more times, but God would not ask anything that he would not make possible (1 Cor. 10:13). The truth is that I sin because I choose to, and not because I have to. Someone will point to Romans 7 and say, “Well, then what was Paul saying when he said, ‘I do the things I would not and don’t do the things I would’.” My reply: read the rest of the chapter where he asks who can deliver from this sinfulness – “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25). Stop making excuses for sin and confess it as sin.  There is no excuse for sin.

V. 17,- 19

These verses underline what Peter has already said, “conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay upon earth” (NASB) because we have an impartial judge and remember that your salvation that granted to you freely by grace was not free  - it cost the life of the Jesus.

Note

The Bible, from the first to the last book, is about Jesus. From our new birth in Christ until our glorification, our life is a reflection about Jesus. Circumstances and events are only opportunities to show the world who Christ is through our conduct.

V. 21

Peter again underlines the one thing that keeps the believer going – the hope we have in the resurrected Jesus. Jesus is God’s divine revelation that causes men to believe in God. Nature may declare there is a God (Psalm 19) but Jesus is the very image of the invisible God (Colossian 1:15).

V. 22.

Since you have been saved, you now have a sincere love for other believers. One of the marks of true salvation is a love for other Christians. Sadly not much is being said about this today. Jesus said that by the love we have for other believers that the world would know we were His disciples (John 13:35).  Much of what the world sees today of Christianity is nothing more that bickering, and sometimes outright hatred. Christians seldom ‘turn the cheek’ nor do they go ‘the extra mile’ (Matthew 5:38-48). Perhaps the world is not getting worse but Christians are growing cold.

V.23

I wonder if Peter was thinking of the Parable of Sower (Matthew 13:1-9; 18-23). In that case, as in this case, the seed was the word of God.  The seed that springs into salvation is not church programs but rather the word of God. Preaching without the word is powerless but preaching with the word is “the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).

V. 23-25

The word of God is living – it is alive! Why some wish to present it as some dead dry stick is beyond me. It is alive and imperishable – it abides forever!  The seed that is planted within you will never perish nor will the salvation that springs up from it.

It should be noted that the locations of the churches that first received this letter is where Paul and his companions did a great deal of preaching. Peter gives testimony to the authority of Paul’s preaching as being the word of God.
